8th Grade Math - Surface Area

This post explains and gives practice opportunities related to TEKS 8.7B:

use previous knowledge of surface area to make connections to the formulas for lateral and total surface area and determine solutions for problems involving rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, and cylinders

Instruction

Students learn to differentiate between the lateral surface area (surface area without bases) and the total surface area of prisms and cylinders.

STAAR Practice

Between 2016 and 2025 (including redesign practice), this readiness standard has been tested 20 times on the STAAR test. Videos explaining the problems can be found below.
