This post specifically looks at how place value charts can be used to compare/order numbers. Read more about TEKS Tools and their rationale here.
PlAce Value Charts
Place value charts, the third TEKS Tool, account for around 9% of each 5th grade STAAR test. These charts help students understand our base-10 number system, including the use of decimals.
The main function of a place value chart is to show the relationship between place value locations in our number system. By visualizing numbers on a place value chart, students can compose, decompose, compare, and order numbers and understand place value magnitude.
CoMParing
Students are asked to compare multiple numbers using place value.
5.2B - compare and order two decimals to thousandths and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =
Click on each > to expand
2023-13: five comparisons were given, students had to identify two that were true

2024-31: four numbers were given, students had to identify the correct comparison

Ordering
Students are asked to list numbers from greatest to least or least to greatest and find a certain position in the list.
5.2B - compare and order two decimals to thousandths and represent comparisons using the symbols >, <, or =
Click on each > to expand
2024-23: four numbers were given, students had to order them from least to greatest and identify the second position

2025-5: four numbers were given, students had to order them from least to greatest and identify the third position

2025-28: four numbers were given, students had to order them from least to greatest
