This post specifically looks at how algebraic reasoning can be used to solve one-step equations and inequalities. Read more about TEKS Tools and their rationale here.
Algebraic Reasoning
Algebraic reasoning accounts for around 27% of each 6th grade STAAR test. This thinking does not use a visible tool but instead relies on applying algebraic concepts to expressions, equations, and inequalities.
The main function of algebraic reasoning is to identify relationships in problem situations, apply the properties of operations and equality, and solve equations and inequalities.
Properties of Equality
Applying the properties of equality allows for one-variable equations and inequalities to be solved.
6.9B - represent solutions for one-variable, one-step equations and inequalities on number lines
Click on each > to expand
2024-20: an inequality was given, students had to represent it on a number line

6.10A - model and solve one-variable, one-step equations and inequalities that represent problems, including geometric concepts
Click on each > to expand
2023-17: an inequality was given, students had to find the solution

2024-5: an equation was given, students had to find the solution

Substitution
When given a one-variable equation or inequality, substitution can be used to verify its validity.
6.10B - determine if the given value(s) make(s) one-variable, one-step equations or inequalities true
Click on each > to expand
2023-23: a value was given, students had to determine in which equation it was true

2024-1: a value was given, students had to determine in which equation it was true

2025-4: a value was given, students had to determine in which inequality it was true
