This post specifically looks at how formulas can be used solve problems involving volume. Read more about TEKS Tools and their rationale here.
Formulas
Formulas, the fourth TEKS Tool, account for around 7% of each 5th grade STAAR test. These formulas are applied to solve problems related to area, perimeter, and volume.
The main function of a formula is to understand the relationship between quantities. In fourth grade, students were first introduced to the formulas for area and perimeter of squares and rectangles. In fifth grade, they are introduced to the formula for volume of a rectangular prism.
Volume
5.4H - represent and solve problems related to perimeter and/or area and related to volume
Students are asked to solve problems using both versions of the volume formula (V = Bh and V = l x w x h).

2023-32: the volume and height were given, students had to solve for the base

2024-3: a volume was given, students had to find two shapes with that volume

5.6A - recognize a cube with side length of one unit as a unit cube having one cubic unit of volume and the volume of a three-dimensional figure as the number of unit cubes (n cubic units) needed to fill it with no gaps or overlaps if possible
Students are asked to recognize when volume is the correct measurement to use in problem situations.

2024-26: the length, width, and height were given, students had to solve for the volume
