This post specifically looks at how formulas can be used solve problems involving unit conversions. Read more about TEKS Tools and their rationale here.
Formulas
Formulas, the fourth TEKS Tool, account for around 10% of each 4th grade STAAR test. These formulas are applied to solve problems and convert units.
The main function of a formula is to understand the relationship between quantities. Starting in fourth grade, applying formulas will be a main stay in mathematics for the remainder of a student's academic journey.
Unit conversions
4.8C - solve problems that deal with measurements of length, intervals of time, liquid volumes, mass, and money using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division as appropriate

2023-6: two units of liquid capacity (total and part) were given, students had to find the missing part using a unit conversion

2023-23: two weights were given, students had to compare using a unit conversion

2025-32: three distances were given (parts), students had to find the total and perform a unit conversion on the sum
