This post specifically looks at how formulas can be used solve problems involving linear relationships in the form of graphs, tables, equations, and verbal descriptions. Read more about TEKS Tools and their rationale here.
Formulas
Formulas account for around 22% of each 7th grade STAAR test. These formulas are applied to solve problems related to volume, surface area, composite figures, linear relationships, and composite figures.
The main function of a formula is to understand the relationship between quantities. The concepts of independent and dependent quantities were first introduced in 6th grade. Now, in 7th grade, students explore the constant of proportionality (k = y/x) and slope-intercept form (y = mx + b).
Linear Relationships
Proportional linear relationships can be represented with y = kx, with k being the constant of proportionality.
7.4C - determine the constant of proportionality (k = y/x) within mathematical and real-world problems

2023-33: a table was given, students had to calculate the constant of proportionality

For non-proportional linear relationships, students use slope-intercept form.
7.7A - represent linear relationships using verbal descriptions, tables, graphs, and equations that simplify to the form y = mx + b

2023-25: a table was given, students had to represent the linear relationship with an equation

2025-21: a graph was given, students had to represent the linear relationship with an equation
