Formulas: Area [TEKS Tools Grade 6]

This post specifically looks at how formulas can be used solve problems involving area. Read more about TEKS Tools and their rationale here.

Formulas

Formulas account for around 8% of each 6th grade STAAR test. These formulas are applied to solve problems related to area, volume, and converting units.

The main function of a formula is to understand the relationship between quantities. In fourth grade, students were first introduced to the formulas for area and perimeter of squares and rectangles. In fifth grade, they were introduced to the formula for volume of a rectangular prism. In sixth grade, the formulas for area of a triangle, parallelogram, and trapezoid are explored.

Area

6.8B - model area formulas for parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles by decomposing and rearranging parts of these shapes

2023-9: a formula was given, students had to find the matching justification

6.8C - write equations that represent problems related to the area of rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles and volume of right rectangular prisms where dimensions are positive rational numbers

Click on each > to expand

2025-15: the area was given, students had to write an equation to solve for the height

6.8D - determine solutions for problems involving the area of rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and triangles and volume of right rectangular prisms where dimensions are positive rational numbers

Click on each > to expand

2023-25: five shapes were given, students had to find three with the same area

2025-21: five shapes were given, students had to find two with the same area
